COMMUNITY GATHERING

The Town of Oakville is supporting the Sisters in Spirit event taking place next Tuesday in Town Square. On Monday, red dresses will be hung in various locations around Oakville to symbolize lost Indigenous women and girls. There will be some red dresses hung on the banner poles in the Kerr BIA.

Background:

The Center for Indigenous Learning and Support at Sheridan College and WHAM ( Women of Halton Action Movement) are preparing for Oakville's fourth 'Sister in Spirit' gathering.

Every Oct. 4th over 200 of these gatherings are held across Canada where Canadians unite to honour the Missing and Murdered First Nations, Metis and Inuit Women and Girls. This Year's gathering will be held at Town Square between 5 and 6 PM.

Committee Members are asking you to help them bring more awareness by enabling the hanging of Red Dresses around Oakville on Oct. 3rd which will be taken down after the gathering on the 4th. We have obtained 45 red dresses from friends and second hand stores and will hang them at strategic spots around Oakville where they will draw the most attention.

Why red dresses? They are symbols; visual reminders of the staggering number of women and girls no longer with us. Jaime Black's REDress Project installation at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is being replicated all over the country. The artist says " I hope to draw attention to the gendered and radicalized nature of crimes against aboriginal women and to evoke a presence through the making of absence". Please Google REDress for more information and visuals.
